Summary and Rank

By Daniel

So your saying, "Why do you need a summary for the movie, it's almost the same as the book". Well the key word is almost. Below is a summary of the movie Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Differences between the book and the movie are listed as well. A 'rank' of the movie from the scale of 1-20 (1 being the best) is also given.

Harry Potter has returned to the Dursleys, after a wonderful though dangerous first year at Hogwarts. Harry's Aunt and Uncle are being just as horrible to him as ever and he can't wait to get back to Hogwarts. But it seems someone has different plans for Harry Potter... Dobby the House Elf appears one evening in Harry Potter's room, and he warns Harry that he must not go back to Hogwarts because terrible, terrible things are going to happen there.
Harry explains to Dobby that he must go back to Hogwarts because it is the only place where he feels happy. But Dobby is determined to keep Harry out of harms way, so he bewitches a cake to float across the room to where the Dursley's guest are sitting and crashes the cake down on top of Mrs. Mason's head. Dobby disappears shortly after this event and Harry receives a letter warning Harry that he is not allowed to do magic while away from school, and if it happens again he will be expelled from Hogwarts.
Despite Dobby's warnings and his attempt to get him expelled, Harry returns to Hogwarts with his friends Ron (by way of a flying car) and Hermione and everything seems to be fine... until Harry begins hearing voices. But it's not hearing the voices that is scaring Harry, it's what the voice is saying: "I smell blood... Let me rip you... tear you!..." Soon after hearing this voice, students (and a dreadful cat) begin being attacked...and the terrible things Dobby warned him about, begin happening...
Join Harry, Ron, and Hermione as frantically try to find the person responsible for these attacks. But the mystery of these attacks must be solved quickly, or Hogwarts will surely have to be shut down... and Harry will have to go back and live with the horrible Dursleys, forever.

-In the 2nd Harry Potter book it was a pudding that Dobby dropped on the floor. In the movie Dobby drops a cake on Mrs. Masonís head.

-In the movie, Uncle Vernon falls out the window as he is trying to stop Harry from escaping. In the book, he does not fall out the window.

-Unlike the book, there is no de-gnoming in the movie.

-In the movie, Harry does not give his free books, which he received from Lockhart, to Ginny.

-In the movie, Lockhart does not announce that he is the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher while he is in Flourish and Blotts.

-There is no brawl between Mr. Weasley and Lucious Malfoy in the movie.

-In the movie, Ron does not engage the Invisibility booster until after the Ford Anglia had risen several feet into the air.

-Warner Bros. couldnít resist adding a bit more Hollywood to the film by adding the scene in which Harry is dangling from the car above the Hogwarts Express.

-In the movie, Filch is the one who finds Harry and Ron after the tree collision. In the book, it is Snape who finds them.

-In the movie, Ron does not say why he is scared of spiders.

-In the movie, Dumbledore does not even examine Mrs. Norris before announcing that she is petrified.

-In the book, Professor Binns tells the students about the Chamber of Secrets. Yet in the movie Professor McGonagall is the one that tells them.

-In the book, Moste Potente Potions is in the Restricted section. Yet in the movie, Hermione pulls it from a library shelf as if it is an ordinary book.

-In the movie, Snape does not allow Ron and Harry to be dueling partners because of Ronís broken wand. In the book, he suggests Harry and Draco as partners just to be nasty.

-In the book, Harry actually puts the Sorting Hat on while in Dumbledoreís office. In the movie, Harry simply talks to it as it sits on a shelf.

-For some reason, Warner Bros. decided to have Harry and Ron keep their original voices even after they drank the Polyjuice potion.

-In the movie, Harry easily pulls the wad of paper out of Hermioneís petrified hand. Yet in the book, he had to carefully pull it out.

-In the book, Harry and Ron find out that Ginny had been taken into the Chamber of Secrets while hiding in a wardrobe in the teacherís staff room.

-In the movie, Fawkes heals Harry after Riddle has gone. But in the book, Fawkes heals Harry before he destroys the Diary.

Overall, I think the movie Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was an improvement from the first movie. The actors played their parts more naturally since they had more experience, fewer cinematic errors were made, and story line was better.

Therefore I give the movie Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets the Rank: 2
