Harry and Ginny

By: Nina T.H.

As we all should have noticed, Ginny had a crush on Harry in the second book. She acted like any girl with a crush on a celebrity. Imagine if your brother or sister was best friends with your favourite movie star and he/she was to stay at your house. She knocked over things whenever Harry walked into the room or talked to her. In the prisoner of Azkaban, she looked even more troubled, but as Harry thought; that was probably because he saved her life. Now in GoF, Ginny is clearly miserable when she found out that she could have gone to the Yule Ball with Harry instead of Neville. This does in my opinion mean that she wanted to go with Harry, but didn't think he would be available and therefore excepted Neville's invitation. But in OotP things changed: She didn't knock things over anymore, she didn't blush when she talked to Harry, no; she acted completely normal! We also found out that she was dating Michael Corner. There are two main theories about this: 1- Ginny is over Harry and therefore she's dating other people. 2- She's just over the crush, not Harry (there's a big difference between having a crush on the celebrity Harry, and having a crush on Harry himself). This could mean that she's trying to make Harry jealous, but that just doesn't sound like a "Ginny" thing to do. There's one more thing we should take a closer look at: "Ginny used to fancy Harry, but she gave up on him months ago". This also has 2 possible meanings: 1- Again: She's over him. 2- She gave up on him because she sees him as "out of reach". Now I was neither for nor against this relationship, but there was one thing that made think a lot:

Ron looked highly delighted. "Well, I always thought he was a bit of an idiot," he said. "Good for you. Just choose someone -better- next time." He cast Harry an oddly furtive look as he said it.

My number 1 concern about a Harry-Ginny relationship was the Weasley's reaction. This shows that Ron at least, is more than "fine" with the idea of Harry dating his little sister. Now does that make sense to any of you guys? It sure doesn't to me! If one of my best friends was thinking about dating my little brother I'd be furious (sure, it would be really weird since he's just 5, but you get my drift, right?) !!! We saw Ron's reaction when Hermione told him about Ginny and Michael Corner and when Ginny told about Dean: Why would it be different with Harry? Theory 1- Ron knows that Harry is a good guy and that Ginny would be in good hands (ironic choice of words, I know… Hands- tihi). Theory 2- Ron hangs with Harry most of the time and that way he can have the situation "under control". Theory 3- If Harry is dating Ginny, Ron has an excuse for dating Hermione (if Harry is dating Ron's sister he has no right in being mad at Ron for dating Hermione). Now which one of the theories is most believable, I don't know; that's up to you to decide. Whether or not Ginny likes Harry is something I've thought a lot about. But does Harry like Ginny? In my opinion, the answer to that is no… at least not yet. Harry hasn't shown any interest in Ginny in that way whatsoever (if you disagree, please let me know why). I think this is because he still sees Ginny as a little girl. This is proved when Harry, Ron and Hermione is about to go to the ministry of magic (fly would be the correct word). When Ginny says she's going with them Harry tries to explain that she's too young. Harry wasn't too young for Cho, so why should Ginny be too young for Harry? Maybe Harry will realize this in book six or seven.

The Situation right now: Perhaps Ginny still likes Harry, but has, as Hermione said, given up on him. That would mean that she still likes him, but has accepted the fact that he doesn't see her in "that way". Some think she could be wrong there. Maybe Harry will notice Ginny in the next or last book. Ginny's big part in OotP will probably lead to that Harry gets more "contact" with her. He will be around her more, talk to her more, and he probably won't see her as a little girl after her big effort in fighting the death eaters. Of course, Harry could notice her, but too late. Maybe Ginny has convinced her self to let Harry go and when Harry starts to like her, she doesn't believe him… After what happened in the fifth book, their relationship is bound to grow stronger, but the question is whether grow in a romantic or friendly way. That's something for all of us to think about! I personally think that Ginny has more of a possibility with Neville, but that is another article…
