My Side of the Mountain

A Review by Daniel

My Side of the Mountain is one of my all-time favorite books. I first read it during the 7th grade, and it's truly a classic. The book is a story of a young boy named Sam Gribley who is tired of living in New York and decides to run away from home and live of the land. His father lets him go because he thinks that, like most other boys who run away from home, Sam will be back in a day or two. But it turns out he is very wrong about his son. Sam is determined to survive in the wild. He goes to live in the nearby Catskill Mountains. During his stay in the mountains Sam learns a LOT about nature and himself. He gains a great respect and understanding of nature's peacefulness, simplicity, and usefulness.

My Side of the Mountain was published in 1959 and has received the Newberry Honor Book award.

This really is a wonderful book. The story line is very creative and yet very realistic. Sam's adventures are great fun to read about. The books contains common themes such as friendship, bravery, humor, and adventure. I highly recommend this book to all of you, and it has two wonderful sequels to read as well.
